KVASU to establish state of art National level referral lab and Animal house at Trivandrum



                              Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University will establish Animal house, state of art National referral laboratory and International training centre at the proposed life science park at Kazhakoottam, Trivandrum in association with Kerala State Industrial Development Co-operation. An MOU has been signed in this regard. Says Vice Chancellor of KVASU Dr.B.Ashok. Directorate of Entrepreneurship of the University has been assigned the task of identifying appropriate projects based on market feasibility The proposed centre has three divisions which include an internationally accredited CGMP compliant animal production house, state of art referral laboratory at the National level in order to diagnose emerging diseases including zoonotic and contagious diseases and international training centre for capacity building. CGMP refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations. CGMPs provide for systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities. This centre will offer move on to open online courses under technology enabled mode in association with University of Guelph, Canada, University of Connecticut, USA, University of Bristol, UK and University of Western Australia. Since there is no National level animal disease referral diagnostic laboratory facility in South India, it will help the State to diagnose emerging diseases including Avian Influenza and Kysanur Forest Disease at a faster pace. Cornell University based at United States will assist KVASU in setting up Animal houses in the Life Science Park Setting up a CGMP compliant laboratory animal production house would cost around Rs.30 Crores. It will take 18 months to make the project operational. With regard to laboratory animal production, annual requirement across the globe is more than 250 Crores. If KVASU can able to supply laboratory animal across the south east Asian region as part of ASEAN agreement it is a huge market which can fetch nearly 25 Crore Rupees per annum. Experts from Cornel University will assist KVASU in setting up the CGMP compliant facility in the proposed animal house. Series of discussions were held between KSIDC and KVASU officials about the implementation of the project.
