Brexit 2016 will be an opportunity for Indian students

Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan

The decision of Brexit 2016 to separate UK and European Countries from European Union may facilitate customised and cost effective education for International students. Of the 5 lakh Indian students studying in developed countries more than 48 percent are pursuing education in EU and UK. Other countries include USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, etc. Previously UK was the market leader in overseas education due to its cutting edge technology, new generation courses, flexible curriculum and quality education. Even though UK started attracting students from developing countries; European countries were reluctant to give more emphasis to English education initially. Realising the success story from UK, EU countries started promoting international education for students from developing counties. At a time when UK curtailed post study work visa from 2011 April onwards, in order to attract more Indian students all European countries are allowing post study work visa up to three years. This will facilitate the students to meet the cost of education incurred.UK and EU is competitors in providing quality education. But UK is providing post study work visa only for 1000 students involved in Entrepreneurship. There is a growing apprehension among students aspiring for education in UK and EU as a sequel to Brexit 2016.Brexit decision will facilitate UK and EU universities to offer cost effective and customised courses for International students. Decline in value of Pound, Euro and dollar will reduce the cost of education and fee structure in the above countries. Indian students will get more bargaining power while choosing courses. Number of scholarships offered by UK and 27 EU countries will further increase for under graduate and graduate programmes.

Initially it affects some of the Indian companies working in IT and hospitality sectors. In India more than 17 percent of export revenue in IT sector is from UK. Whereas from EU it is around 14 percent. More than 167 UK and EU Universities are offering twinning programmes with Indian Universities. Biological research, Technology, hospitality, tourism, finance, management, art and design courses.
