Wayanad Coffee may get better positioning in the Global market

In the globalized era where the proposal to convert Wayanad as a Carbon Neutral district in the recent State budget will provide better market opportunities for Coffee growers of Wayanad. Wayanad ranks first in Coffee production in the State. India has produced 3,27,000 tons of coffee in 2014-15 of which 233 thousand tons was produced by Karnataka. Kerala ranks second in production. India accounts for only 4-5 per cent of the world’s output, but exports 70-80 per cent of its produce. Italy, Russia and Germany are the top three buyers of Indian coffee. With 4% share in world output, India is ranked 6th in the world. Recently the market demand is more towards Robusta variety. Says Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan, Director of Entrepreneurship, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Pookode, Wayanad. Robusta variety is very popular in the district.
Carbon Neural Status will reduce the quantity of greenhouse gases and will reduce the impact on ozone layer in the region. It will help to improve productivity and sustainability in Coffee production. Moreover Coffee growers can practice good Agricultural, Production, processing and retail practices unique to the region. Coffee from this region will be unique in quality, food safety, flavor and taste. This can be branded as ‘Wayanad Coffee’ and can be marketed across the globe. This ecofriendly/natural coffee will fetch higher price in the international market. Recently Meeenangadi Gram panchayat of Wayanad district launched Carbon neutral project to facilitate ecofriendly practices in the grama panchayat. Carbon neutrality is substantiated and supported by best practice auditing and Carbon emissions accounting methods.
The Carbon Neutral initiative will be a value added programme and will position Wayanad Coffee in the global market and the traders will get better opportunity to market the product across the world. Moreover it will facilitate Entrepreneurs to venture in to new areas of processing, value addition, packaging and marketing of the Coffee as separate product in the International market. This will reduce the pace of shift from maturity to decline stage of Coffee market across the World.
