There is growing apprehension among students aspiring for Student and H1B Visa in United States. But President Donald Trump’s move to adopt merit based immigration system will be beneficial for Indian students who completed STEM courses from US. Moreover it will be beneficial to tech professionals from India. Moreover it is clear fact that Trump will not get required number of STEM professionals from US. Now Trump is concentrating on semiskilled or unskilled jobs wherein Americans were not getting added opportunities. So Americans first agenda will be applicable to unskilled/semi skilled worker category. IT and medical professionals from India are the major group working in United States under H1B visa. Indian Scientists which forms 3 percent of total scientist population in US contribute more than 30 percent scientific contribution to United States.
Trump introduced the idea of a merit-based immigration system after invoking the memory and words of late President Abraham Lincoln, saying, "Lincoln was right and it is time we heeded his words.
"Switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration, and instead adopting a merit-based system, will have many benefits: it will save countless dollars, raise workers' wages, and help struggling families -- including immigrant families -- enter the middle class," Trump said in a State of the Union-style address that lasted for an hour.
"Protecting our workers also means reforming our system of legal immigration. The current, outdated system depresses wages for our poorest workers, and puts great pressure on taxpayers," he said.
Trump said he believes that real and positive immigration reform is possible as long as it focuses on the goals to improve jobs and wages for Americans to strengthen the country's security and to restore respect for laws.
"If we are guided by the well-being of American citizens then I believe Republicans and Democrats can work together to achieve an outcome that has eluded our country for decades," he said. Indian IT professionals account for the largest number of foreign nationals coming to the US on H-1B visas.
