UK to promote International education through student support services

Dr.T.P.Sethumadhavan

UK Government is planning to implement student friendly programmes for the International students. ‘Oxford Economics for Universities UK studies’ report reveal that International students contribute 25.8 Billion Pound to UK economy. UK used to get an annual incomeof around 4.2 billion Pounds through tuition fee from non-European countries. UK was the market leader in promoting International education in English due to its cutting edge technology, new generation and customized courses, flexible curriculum and advanced learning methodologies. British council is facilitating UK education. But UK curtailed post study work visa since April 2011 which affected students especially from Asian countries. Even though UK is providing quality education, cost of education in UK is high compared to other developed countries.Students used to pursue UK education through funding supports like Scholarships, Assistantships and Fellowships or through Part time employment. Some of the Students used to take bank loans to pursue for study abroad programmes. Post study work visa facilitated them to pay the accrued bank loans with interest. At the same time other European countries like Germany, France, New Zealand, etc along with countries like US, Australia, Canada, Singapore and China started promoting international education and attracting students for higher education and career. This affected reduction in number of students pursuing for education in UK substantially. During 2016 there was a reduction of 41000 international students in UK education. Indian students account for 6 percent of the total international students pursuing for education in UK.
In view of the reduction in student enrollment, UK is trying to implement more support services to attract international students and insists the Brightest and the best students. UK Government recently rejected the move to remove international student numbers from immigration statistics. This will provide certain provisions for international students including part time work visa and post study work visa. There may not be any limit on number of International students. In the post Brexit context there will be substantial change in student support system which will facilitate more Indian students to study in UK universities. More than 140 UK universities are collaborating Indian Universities and implementing twinning programmes in India. UK is the market leader in offering one year professional Masters programme across the World.
