ICAR lauded KVASU’s Academic and Research innovations


Indian Council of Agriculture research (ICAR) has sanctioned One Crore Rupees under the scheme Strengthening and Development of Agriculture education for the year 2013-14 to Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. ICAR sanctioned this amount immediately after visiting the Pookode and Mannuthy Campuses of the University. ICAR oversight Committee under the leadership of Dr.C.Devakumar, Assistant Director General (EPD) visited the University from 30th April to 4th May 2013. As a sequel to satisfactory visit of the team ICAR lauded the efforts of KVASU in the areas of education, research and extension.

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) is gearing up for major development activities in the areas of infrastructure development of the campuses, academics, research, extension and entrepreneurial activities during the year 2013. KVASU has signed MOU with Kerala Forest research institute for collaborative research and education in the areas of wild life studies and conservation. Research activities in the University’s centre for wild life studies will be further strengthened with the collaboration of KFRI and University of Calgary, Canada. This will benefit the students of KVASU in training wildlife related subjects and research. Moreover it will strengthen the association between the two organizations in tune with the global developments in the field of Conservation Medicine.

As part of international collaboration KVASU signed MOU with pioneering institutions like Royal Dick School of Veterinary science of University of Edinburgh in Animal welfare and pursuing further for a meaningful collaboration with University of Calgary (Canada), University of Connecticut (USA), University of Western Australia (Australia) in emerging areas of research like conservation medicine, climatology, ruminal genomics, etc. Moreover faculty and researcher exchange programmes will be facilitated through international research. KVASU signed MOU with Kottackal Ayurveda college in the areas of holistic and ethno veterinary medicine. A Centre for ethno veterinary medicine will be established to streamline research in these areas.

A Workshop on Perspective plan for Wayanad 2030 was held at Pookode Campus for a development oriented perspective plan. Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment will jointly explore research potential in Agriculture and allied fields in the areas of Biotechnology, Biomedical research, adaptive and mitigatory measures in Climatology, reduction of stress in animal houses and application of informatics for livestock development are the immediate priorities of research in the University.

Distance learning and Entrepreneurship
Taking in to account the increasing requirement of Entrepreneurship managers and farm Journalists Directorate of Entrepreneurship of KVASU is offering distance learning programmes under technology enabled mode. They include Livestock-Agri Entrepreneurship Management and Farm journalism. University’s School of New Media and Research and Distance learning Centre will offer these programmes under technology enabled mode. E learning facilities of KVASU along with Indira Gandhi National Open University, Amrita University and other prospective reputed institutions shall be probed into for the distance learning programme. An MOU with Amrita University will be signed soon in this regard. KVASU is collaborating with Jyothis- the educational extension programme aimed at creating awareness on higher education among plus two students of the state. Entrepreneurship directorate of the University published eight books different livestock enterprises for the farmers of the state during 2012.University recently launched a farm journal KASAVU- www.kasavu.in for the farmers and entrepreneurs of the state and started Centre for Livestock Policy and Development and Research and Training at Trivandrum.
