Education & Career in Canada-Prospects & Processes


 Canada is emerging as one of the safest destinations for students and unemployed youths for higher education and career. Compared to other countries, unemployment rate is comparatively less in Canada. Country offers customised under graduate, graduate, doctoral and skill development programmes. Recent statistics reveal that 1.2 lakh Indians are pursuing higher education in Canada. Of the total Universities, 27 Universities in Canada acquired the status of World class. Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine and Management are some of the emerging sectors in Canada. As a sequel to visa issues with regard to H1B ad L1 visa in United States, lot of international students including Indians prefer Canada as the country of their choice.

University of Toronto, McGill University, University of British Columbia, Guelph, Alberta, de Montreal, Calgary, Waterloo, Western, Queen’s, Victoria, Ottawa, Saskatchewan, Windsor, Victoria, York, Concordia, Dalhousie, Carleton, Regina, etc are some of the best rated Universities in Canada.
Students pursuing for education and career can choose two pathways. It includes higher education in Canada or through Canada immigration. With the recent visit of Canadian Prime minister Justin Trudeau, India and Canada mutually signed several agreements in which focus areas.
Canada immigration
More than 2.5 lakh new immigrants are arriving in Canada per year through immigration route. This includes skilled worker category, business immigration category and family immigration programme. The Skilled Worker category is a very popular visa programme intended for people with high levels of skills and experience.40 percent of the annual immigration to Canada is under the family reunion and refugee programmes.
During 2018 Canada increased the targets for Canada immigration during 2018. This may increase in the coming three years. Canada will be expecting 3.1 lakh and 3.4 lakh immigrants during 2018 and 2019 respectively. This will be mostly under federal skilled worker programme. Annually around 3000 candidates will get Canada immigration through express entry system.
While applying for Canada immigration, there is a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Candidate needs to assess whether he may get 67 points/not, then only he is eligible to apply for immigration. The CRS gives you a score from your profile answers, including your skills, education, language ability, work experience and other factors.
The CRS also gives you points for Canadian degrees, diplomas or certificates, a valid job offer and nomination from a province or territory. For language skills the candidate will get 28 marks for write, read, listen and speak English or French. The minimum IELTS score requirement is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below6.  Applicants for Undergraduate Nursing programs: IELTS 7, with at least 6.5 in reading and listening and at least 7 in writing and speaking. Score can be calculated based on age, qualification, IELTS score, work experience, etc. Post graduates and professionals will get better scores.
Age will get maximum point of 110, level of education 150 points, language proficiency 160 points, Canadian work experience 80 points, level of education of spouse or partner will get 10 points, their language proficiency 20 points and work experience 10 points. Transferable skills of the candidate will get 100 points. Maximum score is 600. Minimum 67 percent scores are required. Canadian Government has released three-year Canada Immigration Plan for 2018-2020, with a target to welcome 980,000 new permanent residents to the country. The plan was published on November 1, 2017. After immigration you can apply for permanent residency in Canada. PR for five years will facilitate the candidate to apply for Canadian citizenship.
Education in Canada
With regard to higher education, Canada provides world-class education with cutting edge technology. Employability index is high in Canada. Students aspiring for education in Canada can pursue for under graduate, graduate or post graduate research programmes. Scholastic aptitude Test-SAT and International English Language Testing System-IELTS scores are required for admission to undergraduate programme. For graduate, PG or doctoral programme IELTS with the band of minimum 7/9 is required for admission. Students after completing UG programme can pursue for graduate programme in Canada. Since atmospheric temperature is comparatively less in Canada, a student from India can choose the falls semester during September-October months than winter semester.
Education is costly in Canada. So students can pursue for getting appropriate funding like Scholarship, Fellowship, Assistantship or Part time employment. Compared to other countries, students after completing their programme may get post study work permit.
While applying for higher education Canada choose the right subject, right college/ University, search for the appropriate programmes, assess the employability and research opportunities. Most of the Canadian Universities accept IELTS score. But some institutions accept TOEFL or Cambridge English Advanced test scores.
Application components
Each University sets its own required documents but, generally, most of the institutions require Graduation certificate/diploma/Plus 2, A completed application form, biodata, Letter of Intent, Statement of Purpose, Proof of English language proficiency, Evidence that you can support your  financial status during study programme in Canada, Two letters of academic reference that attest the preparation for Master/PhD studies and evaluation of credentials from a recognised institution that confirms the degree, if studies were taken in an unrecognised university. If the candidate is applying for research programme, a research proposal is also to be attached with the application form.
Funding options
Scholarships and awards for international students are available with exceptional results at various Canadian Institutions. The amount and type of award varies from one institution to another. Obtaining a scholarship is competitive and applications must be made directly to each school. Some of the Scholarships include Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships, Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s Program, IDRC Research Awards, NSERC Postgraduate scholarships, Organization of American States (OAS) Academic Scholarship Program, Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program, Anne Vallee Ecological Fund, Canadian Rhodes Scholars Foundation Scholarships and Trudeau Scholarships and Fellowships. Many Canadian Universities provide scholarships for under graduate students from India. It will vary depending upon the University of their Choice. Indo Sastry fellowships and Scholarships are offered by some of the Canadian Universities to provide funding for faculty exchange and research between Canada and India.
